January 24/10: IDF Field Hospital Begins Transferring Patients to USNS 'Comfort' and other Local Hospitals

Beginning yesterday, 24 January 2010, the IDF Medical Corps hospital in Haiti began transferring dozens of patients (orphans and premature babies) to the Italian hospital in Haiti and to the US Navy Ship, the 'Comfort'.

Statement by Lt. Col. Danny Moshayev:

"Today we are starting a process of evacuating patients to the USNS 'Comfort'. We have fully briefed all commanders of the medical divisions in the hospital. We have picked the patients that can be treated in the American ship. We are operating appropriate tools for the evacuation of the patients. In addition to this mission, we are transferring two premature babies. They are being transferred to the regional Italian hospital, which is capable of effectively treating children, and especially premature babies, and we are sending out a medical team to accompany them, bring them to the hospital and make sure that they are getting the best treatment possible"

Port-au-Prince, Haiti - Brazil aims to distribute 15 tons of food and 22,000 liters of water to the population in Haiti in the coming days.

On Friday, daily food distributions reached 4,000 quake survivors in Port-au-Prince.

UN Force Commander Major-General Floriano Peixoto Vieira Neto said security is absolutely under control.

Eighteen flights have delivered 200 tons of aid including food, water, tents, medicine, a hospital and medical equipment.

There are 46 medical doctors and nurses on the ground, along with 50 firefighters who specialize in search and rescue using sniffer dogs.

Brazil contributes the bulk of troops to the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti. Nearly 1,300 Brazilian UN peacekeepers work in rescue operations.

During the day, January 22, 2010, an IDF search and rescue team in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, rescued a 22 year old man, who had been trapped under the rubble of a building near the presidential palace for nearly 10 days. He was taken to the IDF field hospital in stable condition.

A search conducted by Population Management officers from the Home Front Command, headed by Lt. Col. Rami Peletz, were directed to the location of the trapped man by local residents.

American and French doctors were unable to rescue the trapped man and called upon the Israeli delegations search and rescue teams who rescued the man within half an hour, from a tunnel, 2.5-3-meters long and were able to release him whole and healthy, said Maj. Zohar Moshe, a member of the rescue team

In America it is apparently not uncommon these days to see drivers resting a BlackBerry on top of the steering wheel while using their thumbs to tap in a text message. Legislators across America are debating and developing "anti-texting-while-driving" laws.

A recent study by America's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute shows that 80 percent of car crashes involve some form of driver distraction occurring within three seconds before the vehicle crash. According to the study,the principal distraction that led to vehicle crashes include:

•Cell phone use.
•Reaching for moving objects inside the vehicle.
•Looking at an object or event outside of the vehicle.
•Reading while driving.
•Applying makeup." -more
Life in the 21st Century is becoming more and more bizarre. That's why I fantasize about time travelers returning to 1958 with reports about what it's like here in the future.

On January 18, 2010, there were heavy rains in Israel, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The area was flooded and water reservoirs in the Israeli south were not big enough to hold the floods. Large quantities of water ran to Gaza on the way to the sea. Now Hamas government blames Israel for the damages in Gaza. Israel - of course - is who should be blamed even for floods. You understand?

Summary of the video: It shows that they were trying to rescue someone for hours and they are exhausted, the Haitians aplaud and shout in praise in English. The interviewer asks the team how they feel that the Haitians are doing so. One of the exhausted rescue team members says that they feel that it is wonderful when every time they save a live. At the end of the clip, it shows that it is night time and that the team is carrying someone badly wounded in a stretcher (This is a real Kiddush Hashem/Sanctification of Hashem's name)

As per IBANews on this, the men worked hard trying to cut through the concrete and when they could reach the wonded man, they started him on the I.V. dripper to keep him alive and continued with the rescue until he was removed from the building. He had minor fractures and it took them 8 hours to rescue him. By now there has been at least 3 babies delivered in the Israeli hospital. Port-au-Prince, Haiti - The large field hospital established by the IDF Medical Corps at 10 a.m. Shabbat local time was already treating dozens of patients four hours later, when its commander, Lt.-Col. Dr. Itzik Reiss, was able to take a breather and speak to Israeli health reporters via a conference call.

Children with severe fractures set only with cardboard arrived at the hospital for treatment. Some young patients had been freed from rubble but had to have limbs amputated due to severe gangrene, he said. Within a few hours, operations were performed.

The hospital has an emergency room, pediatric, orthopedic, internal medicine, obstetrics and surgery departments, clinics and other facilities. The delivery room and premature baby unit are prepared to function but have not yet received any women or infants.

The patients started arriving after a local hospital, unable to function normally, announced the IDF facility's existence.

The Israeli facility, set up in very hot and humid weather, has enough equipment to function for about two weeks. The 121-member team has 40 doctors, including a psychiatrist, 20 nurses, 20 paramedics and medics, 20 lab and X-ray technicians and administrators.

Among the staff are Orthodox Jews who went to Haiti even though it was Shabbat. Reiss said they avoided performing unnecessarily tasks like shaving, but did everything needed to save lives. The military personnel are both regular army and reserve soldiers.

It was not clear how many desperate patients would reach the hospital over the coming days, he said. Reiss said he expected victims of infectious disease would start arriving soon.

Haitians were wandering aimlessly in the streets, Reiss said.

"It is very difficult. There is a bad feeling of destruction. It is very sad," he said.

The field hospital may continue operating under Israeli auspices after getting it restocked in two weeks, or it may be turned over to locals, he added

The team worked for 8 hours to extract the man, who was in good condition despite wounds on his limbs and dehydration. He had been trapped in the rubble for 90 hours, and had managed to communicate his location to rescue forces via sms.

The IDF sent an aid delegation of over 220 search and rescue and medical personnel to assist in the rescue efforts following the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Search and rescue teams are working around the clock to extract victims trapped in the rubble and the IDF has constructed a field hospital capable of treating up to 500 people a day near the soccer field in Port-au-Prince, Haiti
